Dalada Maligawa ( The Temple Of Tooth)
The Repository Of A Tooth of Relic the Buddha, this temple in Kandy is one of the holiest sites in the Buddhist world and attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. Very few are privileged to see the relic,; what pilgrims see is the Karanduwa or Dagoba-shaped golden outer casket, one of seven, holding the relic.
During the reign of King kithsiri Mevan the Tooth Relic was brought to Sri lanka from Kalinga by princess Hemamala and prince danta when Buddhism in their region of India was under threat. The Tooth Relic was considered as the symbol of Kingship and became the most sacred object of worship in Sri Lanka
The Tooth Relic was brought to Kandy in 1590. The present temple, was built by King Narendrasingha in the early 18th century and renovated by the King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe later in the same century. The octagonal Pathirippu was added by Sri Wikkrama Rajasinghe, the last King Of Kandy; it housed the temple's collection of book and palm manuscripts.
