Thuparamaya Stupa
Thuparamaya which is not only the oldest Stupa on the island, but is believed to contain the right collarbone of the Buddha. The Stupa was build By King Dewanampiyathissa and stands just over 20 meters (60ft) high and was build in the shape of a heap of paddy. It was Constructed entirely out of earth in the 3rd century B.C. This Stupa has, like a work in progress, been improved upan and embellished by a succession of rulers. During the reign of king agbo II it was completely destroyed and the king restored it. Its present 'bell' shape is the result of major restoration work carried out in 1862.
